Earth Science Description

Name of Course:  Earth Science

Learning Facilitator: Jeffrey Holte

Number of Students: 10

Days we Meet: Monday/Tuesday

Advanced Enrichment Dates: August 11-October 17, 2014

Course Description: On the first day of our Advanced Enrichment  we were all so excited to study about Earth Science. Earth Science means to study about the Earth and all of the things that are related to the environment and the Earth. In our Advanced Enrichment we studied about the rocks, water, weather and all of the planets in space. In Earth Science class we not just only studied and got the theory from the teacher, we also made  an experiment together in class. For example, the thing that we have been experimenting with is making the sugar crystal experiment, the erosion and some other activity. Our group helps each other and works together as a team, not work alone and always listen to the teacher. At the end of our Advanced Enrichment we all were a little bit sad because we all wanted to study more about all of the things on Earth and all of the things that are really special for the Earth.

Physics Description

Name of Course: Physics

Learning Facilitator: Phearun

Number of Students: 12

Dates: August 11-October 17, 2014

Meet: Thursday-Friday

Course Description: Our group learned about Physics. When we began to learn Physics we started to learn about the meaning of Physics. First we just listened to the teacher and learned about the theory of Physics. Sometimes the teacher told the meaning of important words in class. Then we started to work and learn about the Earth science. When we began to learn about Earth science teacher told us how many planets in solar system. Then the teacher mailed to us one video that showed about the new planet. Then he told us to take notes about that video. When we finished learning about that new planet we started to learn about the gravity on Earth. Then he put the work for us to do. When we all knew and understood about it he taught us about the new topics are buoyancy and density of the water. He also told us about formula how to find out the work that he put for us. So now we just learn more about buoyancy.

Biology Description

Name of course: Biology

Learning Facilitator: Jojo

Number of students: 10

Advanced Enrichment Date: Session 1: Aug. 11- Oct 17

Biology is a class that studies about life and organisms. In this class we learned part of Ecology, how are biotic and abiotic factors interconnected, and some parts of Botany, how plants do the photosynthesis. We also studied about cells that are connected to elements and organelles. Every student researched about their own organelles. After researching, we explained to our classmates about the organelles and then we did some experiments with the microscope. By using the microscope to experiment we saw some parts of the cells. We all understood a lot about the cells and we were ready to start a new project. Then we started a project about the cells. We had two groups of students and five students in each group. One of the groups worked on the Animal Cells project and the other worked on the Plant Cells project. The two projects took a long time to finish because they were difficult projects and we had to paint on the big papers and use Scratch with Makey Makey. However these projects were already finished and all of the students felt so proud of themselves and it was a good time for them to collaborate as a team.

Zoology A Description

Name of Course: Zoology

Learning Facilitator: Jojo

Number of Students: 12

Dates: Jan. 19 – March 27

Days we Meet: Monday and Tuesday

Course Description: In our class we learned about the animals, for example bacteria is the first organism that have life on Earth. We learned about different kinds of organismsthat live in the world, for example in ocean there are different kinds of living things like star fishes and turtles. After that we learned about invertebrates and vertebrates. Invertebrates are the organisms that don’t have a backbone. Vertebrates are the organisms that have backbone. Ex: cow have a backbone, sponge don’t have a backbone. We learned about marine animals and territory animals. Marine are the organisms that live in the ocean only. Ex: Octopus are a marine animal. Territory are the organisms that live on land. Ex: cats are the territory animals. In the water there are a lot of insects. We learned how the insects metamorphosis. Metamorphosis means change. We learned about the metamorphosis are about their life cycle. In class we learned a lot ofthings most things that we learned are about the mammals. Mammals are the organisms that have a baby in their belly and give their baby a milk like a human.

Algebra C Description

Name of Course: Algebra C

Learning Facilitator: Jeff

Number of Students: 12

Dates: Jan 19-March 27

Days we Meet: Thursday and Friday

Course Description: Our group learned about Algebra. We started to learn one big keyword is PEMDAS. Then we started to study the definition of each letter. PEMDAS means: P stands for Parenthesis, E stands for Exponent, M stands for Multiply, D stands for Divide, A stands for Add and S stands for Subtraction. After this we learned about negative numbers and positive numbers. We learned how to multiply, divide, add and subtract negative numbers and positive numbers together. With that we had the equation to practice too. When we finished this we drew the number line to know about negative and positive numbers. Then we tried to solve the problems with parenthesis and exponents together. Next we worked on combining like terms and x,y tables. All the problems that we did the teacher can help a little bit and the less we must to do it by ourselves. The teacher helped us and taught us very well. In the class we worked like a team then we gave the work to the teacher to check.

Botany 2 Description

Name of Course: Botany 2

Learning Facilitator: Jojo

Number of Students: 9

Dates: October 20-January 16

Days we Meet: Thursday-Friday

Course Description:In our Advanced Enrichment we learned about botany. Botany means learning about plants. Plants are the only organisms that can make their own food and that’s called sugar or glucose. Plants make their own food is called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis means plants take sunlight to make their own food. Plants make photosynthesis on the leaves. The organ in leaves works to make the food. In leaves have chloroplast and in chloroplast have chlorophyll. Plants take the carbon dioxide and lay out oxygen. During the day, they do photosynthesis. Plants have physical features. There are: roots, stem, leaves, fruits and flowers. In the stem there are two tubes. First tube is for sucking the food or it’s called nutrients and the second tube is for sucking the water. In our class we had the activity is growing the plants. Our resources were paper, plastic bag, water and seed. First we needed to soak paper with water but not very wet and put the seed in it. Rub it not too tight and put in plastic bag. The plastic bag needed to be open for oxygen get in it and put at the place that have a sunlight. We need to put the water, unless the paper is dry. When the seed germinates like come out the stem, leaves, we take out from the paper and put in the soil.

Anatomy 1 Description

Name of Course: Anatomy 1

Learning Facilitator: Jo

Number of Students: 12 students

Days We meet: August 12 – October 17

Course Description: In this Advanced Enrichment we learned about body. Our bodies have four systems: Skeletal system (bones), Digestive system (stomach), Respiratory system (lungs), Circulatory system (heart). We watched the video about people’s bodies. The digestive system is the system that help to break down the food and take the nutrients from the food and take the waste out of body. Digestive system is very important for our body because it helpsyou to break down the food into small pieces. The skeletal system is also important in our body because if you break the bones you will have a big problem. You have to go to the hospital and tell the doctor what is the problem. We also did the presentation for people to listen because we want people to take care of their health. In our group we shared into four teams and one team had three people. We had to share our position in the group: one was patient and two were nurses and doctors. We presented four things and they wereSkeletal system, Digestive system, Respiratory system and Circulatory system. People usedsome clothes to wear when they were acting. We watched the videos and read the books to find information.

Khmer History Description

Name of Course: Khmer History

Learning Facilitators: Darath and Kimchhel

Days of the Week: Monday and Tuesday

Number of Students: 13

Dates Study: August 12-Oct 17

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment we divided the group into two. One group learned with Kimchhel and other group learned with Darath. The group that learned with Kimchhel learned about Chenla era (Chela) and Preah Bath TroSork Pa-eam era (Dark Ages). But the group that learned with Darath learned about Nokor Phnom era (Funan Empire) and Angkor era (Khmer Empire). At the end of the class both groups shared what they had learned and the group that not yet learned took the notes. Then the teacher asked the group that took the notes about what our friends had told us. Usually we did this for both groups. Also, the group that learned with Kimchhel or with Darath reviewed the things that they had learned from last week. When we learned in Khmer History class we learned a lot about Khmer history. Now we want to tell you one thing from every era. Nokor Phnom era (Funan Empire) was from years 68-550. Chenla era (Chenla) was from years 550-802. Angkor era (Khmer Empire) was from years 802-1431. Preah Bath TroSork Pa-eam era (Dark Ages) was from years 1618-1863.
